Addiction is one of the most common behavioral health disorders. Addiction is quite raging in every society. Addiction knows no age bracket and socio-economic status. Addiction as defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary can mean persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

One can get addicted to anything. One can even get addicted to sex and love. Substance addiction is one of the most popular kind of addiction. Its fame has sprung from the representation it gives off, a negative one. People who are in the pits of substance addiction usually present a series of bad behaviors affecting people that surround him or her.

One can get addicted to numerous kinds of substances. Examples of substances that produces negative effects on the body are stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens and PCPs. These substances have an effect on certain biochemicals in our brain which has direct reinforcing effects. The mesolimbic dopamine system is one of the areas of the brain that is involved in effects of these psychoactive substances. A taste of good food and physical pleasure such as those produced by sexual stimulation activates this kind of system. This system can be set off by psychoactive substances already mentioned. However, the effect is much more intense. The activation of mesolimbic dopamine system creates people to desire the reason of activation to replicate its effects. The utilization

of such substances gives off constant changes in one’s mesolimbic dopamine system which makes an individual crave for the substance. The mesolimbic dopamine system gets sensitized once the substance has been used repeatedly. In short term and long term use of these substances, makes hard for the people to resist once they have already tried. The careless trying of any of the substances can make an individual crave for more. This is due to the reason that the short-lived high is so compelling.

Stimulants are substances that turns on the central nervous system. This causes feelings such as happiness, vitality, authority, a decreased desire for sleep, and reduced appetite. Cocaine, amphetamines, nicotine, and caffeine are examples of stimulants. Cocaine is one of the most highly addictive substances ever known. This substance can be inhaled to have its effects felt rapidly. Amphetamines are substances initially initiated as antihistamines until people started noticing its stimulant effects. Nicotine is an alkaloid being found in tobaccos. Nicotine can be famously found in cigarettes. Caffeine on the other hand is the most weighty used stimulant substance. Greatest amount of caffeine used is attributed to the wide use of coffee.

Opioids is used for a thousand of years to reduce pain until its assets have been discovered to be severely addictive. Morphine and heroin are examples of opioids. Morphine was used generally as a pain reliever. This has been in the 19th century until its being addictive was discovered. Methadone and codeine are other examples of opioids. Opioid substances are substances found in the sap of the opium poppy.

When taken in very large amount, these substances produces illusions in perceptions and distortions in the way of thinking in small doses. Peyote, ecstasy, and LSD are the main ingredients of hallucinogens. On the other hand, PCP or phenylcyclidine are substances manufactured for smoking and snorting. PCP is not classified as hallucinogen but its effects are mostly the same. PeaCePill, Tranq, Hog and angel dust are the popular names of PCP outside the laboratory.

Substance addiction is considered as a behavioral health disorder due to the effects brought about by the use of the substance. It produces a great change in ones behavior that is most of the time negative. This alteration in behavior usually affects the people that surround the individual. These substances are against the law and can only be used officially when prescribed by specialists. One should be wary and stay away from this substances to not develop a problem.
