These children might first observe their parents using drugs and later on in life their experiences at early years may put them at higher risk for developing an addiction. Also, it has been observed that people who are more probable to abuse or become dependent on drugs are those who have easy access to drugs, low self esteem or those that come across problems with their present relationships, those who live in a stressful lifestyle and for those individual who live in a culture wherein there is a high acceptance of drug use.

Central nervous system depressants is comprise of barbiturates, benzodiazepines, chloral hydrate and paraldehyde. These central nervous system depressants gives off an anxiety reducing effect and can also act as a sedative. On the other hand, central nervous system (CNS) stimulants include amphetamines, cocaine, dextroamphetamine, methamphetamine, and methylphenidate or retalin. A stimulating effect is what makes this drug attractive to drug users where in succeeding use would lead to tolerance thus higher amount would be needed to achieve the effect which ultimately translate to drug addiction. Hallucinogens include LSD, mescaline, psilocybin and phencyclidine or angel dust. These substances can cause people to see things that did not actually exist and can lead to psychological dependence.
Drug addiction is a result of different stages. Any person may use drugs which may not harm them but others who uses illegal drugs and develop dependence may result to impairment. It has been observed that young people of today seem to surpass more quickly through the stages of drug dependence. First is experimental use which usually involves peers and where being done simply for recreational purposes. Second stage is regular use wherein the user misses more important activities like school or work in order to give attention in the activity of using drugs. This certain stage would make the person to worry about the idea of losing drug source, uses drugs in order to fix negative feelings and begins to join individuals who are regular drug users. Third stage is daily preoccupation. All motivations is lost on this stage. He will not be in mind anymore on his surroundings and will lost interests on important matters. Dependence is the last stage, this will occur when a person cannot face daily life without drugs and losses control when it comes to drugs.
