Depression Treatments

Anyone’s life can be ruined by depression. It does not spare you no matter how old are you. When you are young, depression can leave a big mark of psychological and social scars that you will forever bear. When an adult is inflicted of depression, suicides are often the most well-known solution. Depression is really a big problem. How can one save his or herself from the ugly marks of depression? Importantly, how can you save a life from depression?

Depression has been harming around for a very long time. Specialists have now many different kinds of weapon to battle against it. Different kinds of depression treatments are now available. What are these depression treatments? Psychotherapy, biological treatments, and electroconvulsive therapy are the weapons use in depression treatments.

There are different techniques that psychotherapy offers in battling depression. Psychotherapy can be done in a group. It can also be done alone. The different techniques used in psychotherapy are cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy. The most used on these techniques is cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy works by teaching an individual on depression to discover new set of behaviors and ways of thinking which they can use in dealing with their day to day lives.

The prescription of medicines is how biological treatment works. The major medication considered in a biological treatment is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs There are many kinds of SSRIs such as Zoloft (sertraline), Celapro (escitalopram), and the famous Prozac (flouxetine). These biological treatments function by providing individual great concentrations of serotonin which battle their depressed moods. SSRIs are the most considered antidepression treatment because of their gentle side effects aside from the fact that it is the medication with the broadest effect on the symptoms showed by depression.

When an individual does not respond to the above treatments, the last resort would be ti used electroconvulsive therapy. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT functions by electrically inducing seizures for therapeutic effects. This is done only when all other treatments are not helping. This treatment is very immediate and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately outcome to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. ECT is only used when situations are bordering on hopeless. This is because outcome of ECT is not yet fully studied.

The above discussed treatments are only a part of depression treatments. There are also alternative means of treating depression. Parts of these alternative treatments are acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy. Acupuncture helps in aiding people with depression by its ability to make the body produce high level of endorphins which makes the body produce a feeling of well-being. Exercise functions by giving off physiological effects that help contradict depression. It is also helpful in lowering stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to stimulate different set of moods. Studies have shown that there are certain parts parts of the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions. There are many depression treatments available. It’s a matter of how you call for help.

Depression is a big problem that is why it is important to battle it quickly by the different depression treatments available.
